If You Come Softly is about Jeremiah who is fifteen and black and Ellie who is fifteen and white. They meet at a private school and fall in love and then have to deal with how society treats them because they’re an interracial couple. This book was inspired by a poem by Audre Lorde. As Jeremiah battled with his parents’ separation and his grandmother’s death, he felt the need to have someone understand him. Ellie had felt this same needing ever since her mother’s frequent disappearances. So, when the two finally started seeing each other on a regular basis, it appeared as if their union was sealed by fate. Only, the world did not see it that way. As they grew closer, they were determined to look past society’s disapproval. But, when Ellie decided to inform her parents, it was too late. Jeremiah was killed.
